It was 2015 and I just graduated college. I had no clue how I was going to pay my bills. I didn’t have a job and I only had about 6 months of living expenses. Time was not on my side, but I was working multiple angles. I was waiting to hear back from a job that was sure to be a great starter job. But I was also working plan B. If I didn’t get that job I would go back to school and do ROTC for my masters. That would also mean moving back in with mom, and not being able to upgrade my current apartment. It was a stressful time.
My apartment was that of any typical college students. I had to basics. A bed, couch, tv, and a desk. I was even lucky enough to have a washer and dryer in my house. I pretty sure someone gave me a dinning table too. Looking back people called me cheap quite often. But I lived off what I made not what I had. It made sense to me lol. But my problem was my bed. When I moved in my sister broke the headboard. Every time I laid down, it slapped the wall. The mattress itself was my grandmothers. She passed 7 years early and lords knows how long she had it. Honestly, the mattress didn’t bother me as much. The Army conditioned me to appreciate a mattress, because there were plenty times I didn’t have one. Then there was the straw that broke the camels back. I went away doing something with the Army and my sister had to stay at my house because she was having work at hers. She called me and said. “How do you sleep at night???” I was confused by the question, but then she went on to elaborate how my bed was the worst bed she had ever slpet in. And I was too old to be sleeping like this. My first thought was, “Go stay with mom then,” rolls eyes. However, I knew she was right. I did need to make my apartment look and feel more adult. But how could I when I didn’t have a job, and was living off savings. The bed had to wait. And then another blessing came. I got the job! And I did what most people do when they get a pay raise. I went shopping! I don’t think I worked a week before I went and financed my new bed. To be honest I had the cash to spend on the furniture, but I didn’t want to give up that kind of money right away. I knew I had good credit, so I would be able to apply for their financing and get a good interest rate. I was able to secure financing with no interest for a 12 month period. I could not tell you if the loan had a deferred interest clause because I planned to pay it off in 6 months anyway. And of course the lender did not mention it. But it probably did. The financing process was easy because the financing company was through my bank. I was able to set up auto payments, and like all my other bills it was on auto-pilot. I only slept in the bed for one night. The day after it was delivered I was back on military orders for a few months. I told my sister to go give it a try, I think she was more happy than I was.
